This is a blog (weblog) website aimed at supporting the Self Managed Super Fund (SMSF) Trustee and Retail Stock Investor community. You will find:

  • A repository of useful articles for those planning to start a SMSF and those trustees who are currently running their own funds. The articles are aimed to help you with all aspects of starting and running your own SMSF with a special focus on investment strategies to help you protect and grow the assets in your SMSF (we leave the details on tax and compliance to your accountant).
  • Various free and affordable educational resources on investing and fund management for SMSF Trustees with a limited budget (like us) to help you improve your investment returns
  • Fresh content is added regularly including articles dealing with current hot topics like the global financial crisis, how to protect your stocks in a bear market, and how to increase your income from your stock portfolio even when the dividends get reduced, as well as news and information on the Self Managed Super Fund sector of the Superannuation Industry.

About SLI Superannuation Fund
Content on this blog is produced by Kingsley and Christina McDonald, the trustees of SLI Superannuation Fund (SLI Super), one of the growing number of Self Managed Superannuation Funds (or SMSF) in Australia. SLI is an abbreviation for Strategic Life Investments. We started our own SMSF in March 2007 because we wanted more control and visibility of our own super investments. Neither of us are financial professionals but both have taken the time to get ourselves financially educated. In 2005, Christina took a year off work to learn about stocks and options and is currently the Chief Investment Officer for the fund. In addition to managing the investments for SLI Super, she also actively trades options in the US market for her family owned investment company and is an independent options consultant.  Kingsley still works full-time in the IT industry and his main role is to keep the new super contributions coming in.

SLI Super has just been through the toughest 2 years in the stock market and has managed to generate better returns than most of the professionally managed Super funds. In our first year, the fund had a slightly positive return when most industry super funds had negative returns. We managed to achieve this simply by moving the portfolio completely to cash in December 2007, when the market showed signs of topping, and keeping that cash in a high interest bearing account! Since the interest rates started dropping in 2008, the fund has started using options to boost earnings and is on track for a double digit positive return in the 2009 FY.
